All the windows media players play midi's, the old one with 95 couldn't play mp3's but any of the newer versions can do that, it's true that it can't play CD's or mods, but there is the windows cd player application. I uninstalled the roxio software and reinstalled it with the installation disk and miraculously windows media player began playing mp3's again without the codec format tag 55 error. I had already downloaded a video codec file so I was able to play videos but still could not play mp3's. I don't know why this worked

Why doesn't Windows Media Player support most of the formats?
I've tried several settings, even down to 800x600, 16-bit color as well as changing the theme back to classic but it still won't play them. The Aero display works fine. I've downloaded some codecs and can now get the VLC media player to work. I've also installed the latest video driver for my Nvidia GeForce card
